Hello! Yep, it's April and I said I would see you in March. See my general big update for more information. Right now, I want to talk about my poem "I Understand My Dog". I had been wanting to write that poem for a while before I actually got around to the task. It all started with adoption. In recent years, I've had a lot of thoughts about the adoption process and more specifically, my own adoption. I've analyzed the positives, negatives, and the neutral. I now accept adoption as an imperfect system that needs reform to actually do good. With "I Understand My Dog", I tried to portray the emotional struggles many adoptees experience. My family has an adopted dog and he has so much separation anxiety. I think it's from adoption trauma and I can relate to that. Adoption is sometimes related to fog and I played around with that idea in my poem. Both my dog and I are described as being caught in that fog, wishing for "distant saviors", our birth families. I've read several pieces by other adoptees and many of them describe a "lonely place" or "broken place" where the hardships examined in my poem are experienced. I hope other adoptees reading my poem find comfort and validation. See you in August!
