Sun, I leap toward
Sand, stinging bare feet Harshly, shoved to the Side, where jeering Crowds, twinkle with Hope, for...for...for a Win, for their Favorite, sky glimmering Above, so bright and Beautiful, bird rises from the Ground, where I pant a Rhythm, echoes from the Feet, of racers before me yearning for a Victory, I already have as I face the Sun

A mountain can command a hill
Threatening all light to stand still Still, a bird can fly free Yet, belong to the mountain still But, shimmering in the water Underhill, the fish do not follow There are jewels shimmering tranquilly That belong to the mountain’s daughter Games will be played across craggy cliffs Knights, kings, queens in the abyss Yet, the daughter’s gems are missed For they count more than caverns-filled No one comprehends this riddle For they are lost in their idyll Underneath the mountain that stills Forgetting that it means more to be still than be stilled Jaylen knew how roots coalesced
How each tendril absorbed droplets That stung silt concealed with life She knew how each black strand of hair That draped her head crackled with fire Still gleaming with parables Jaylen listened, observed, wondered And the lessons would cascade in Rippling against her tan skin Only nineteen, yet she could hear Hear the Lao words her parents spoke Hear the wind’s whispers on sand Jaylen understood the beauty Of the minuscules, the stories She comprehended the stars That coruscated bronze at night She laughed with the birds at sunset Felt wet grass underneath feet Jaylen knew that everything had a narrative An inner essence that glimmered But not all had a student who listened |
