We are small, yet the world is big
I think as I clutch the metal bar The world churns in my stomach But all I see is the red of the tarp My feet are not writhing in the air No, they’re sailing until they land On the silver platform on the other side And the crowd below claps, climbing into my ears But all I can hear is you, Your laughter when we sit Quiet in a place Not here

They said the stars would be easy
That if you just reached, you could grasp them Clutch onto their sleek yellow bellies And ascend their golden peaks But no one told you about the stairs The stairs that wind this way and that Criss-crossing with the stars And gliding underneath the moon They’re a maze, you know, A maze no one can get through Yet people try, clambering up each cobbled step Their footsteps quaking the Earth below And making it just a bit more necessary to Reach the stars I have a friend who can climb these stairs Not like those people with their monstrous steps That make it harder for everyone else No, not like that at all She climbs, her footsteps light Stumbling at times, a grimace sometimes Yet she never forgets the people below Showering stardust so it all Becomes brighter and less lonely A signal that there is someone who cares I tried climbing up those stairs once My body aching, my breath shaking And I tripped, about to tumble down Back to the Earth But there was my friend Her hand reaching…grasping mine It was then I realized With her hand around mine That those stars glistening around me didn’t matter For the real star was her, Radiating, burning, blazing with life Two birds squat on the dirt
Soil soothing their weary plumage And the sky sets far beyond their heads Turning them small Just specks in the dust Yet, their pleasure glimmers More radiant than the stars I want to hold onto these moments
That dance in my contemplation Of the two of us, Sitting beside muted lights, Dripping water, running footsteps, sporadic shrieks Yet all that matters being The laughter that quakes from our lips While even the homework, glowing on our desks, Fades into the night with a chuckle I would say I wanted more time
To finish that assignment That one dragging my heart And tackling my mind The one binding me to this chair Where I sit and cry And it wouldn’t be a fib Yet, there is something else Peeking out behind the door Warm, comforting, encouraging A friend with a smile, reminding me That I’m not alone And we still have time I’m standing on a ladder
With my hand clasping the top rung And looking through a window Where birds are flying above Briny water tumbling with stories Of lives lost and loved Yet, my attention dwells on the birds Because their task is what I want done I know when they return, happiness will surely be For my friend will have sent me a message One that only a smile can meet Being around you makes me free
I am a fish swirling through the air My tail flailing among the clouds And you are the rain That soothes my haunted scales As I struggle against the wind You were the first that was there To witness my ascent and my descent To hug my weary tears as I plummet Through the Earth’s crust Clutching nothing but luck You are my friend and you let me be Just a girl who does not deserve This much love Sometimes all I need is a rocketship,
I think as I sit in the night Alone except for a cup of tea That spills on my lap Bursting suns crackling against my hips And I wonder, Where might this rocket soar So newly sleek with adventures Glittering at its feet But so so lonely And trembling Then the droplets tumble to the Concrete and I blink Back on the ground And I listen to the Humming of a friend Bringing the Earth back to me Sam knows what it’s like to breathe
Sticky air clinging to wings They know what it means to not They’ve catched pain splattered on hearts They have cried in moist green fields They’ve bitten the apricots Tasted the bittersweetness Time has taught Sam how to breathe Their friend, breathless at fifteen Taken by a swollen lake That drains those who crave to fly Still, Sam spreads their red-black wings Lets the sun dazzle their spots Swoops toward the eve Ladybug |
